Human ’26 Day 3: Leaving Nairobi, Leaders Turn the Lens Inward

AMBOSELI, Kenya — After two days inside the institutions and histories of leadership, Human ’26 left Nairobi on Wednesday and turned its attention inward.

The day began with a brief reflection on the lessons of the previous two days before the Fellows and Navigators boarded terrain vehicles for the journey to Amboseli. Along the way, the city gave way to open country, and the delegation encountered wildlife as the pace of the program began to slow.

The shift was deliberate.

Human ’26 is organized around three themes: Courage. Coherence. Clarity. After spending its opening days examining courage through institutions, conflict, and public leadership, the program moved toward coherence: the alignment between what leaders believe, how they behave, and the choices they make.

That evening, gathered around a bonfire, the conversation became more personal.

Participants reflected on the experiences that have shaped them, the convictions they hold, and the values they are unwilling to surrender. But the exercise also introduced a harder question: Can a leader stand firmly for something without becoming hostile to those who disagree?

For Human ’26, that tension sits at the heart of coherence.

Leadership is not only about knowing what one believes. It is about whether those beliefs can survive disagreement without becoming contempt, and whether the values leaders profess are visible in the way they listen, respond, and exercise influence.

The journey to Amboseli therefore marked more than a change in geography. In Nairobi, participants had encountered systems, institutions, and the consequences of public leadership. In Amboseli, the focus shifted to the person operating within those systems.

Around the fire, the question was no longer simply what participants believed, but whether the way they lived and led could bear the weight of those beliefs.
