MLIFE’s president, Mwangi Mukami, launched the 2023 Newspaper in Education (NIE) program at Kawangware primary school. Administered by the Learning Enrichment and Acceleration Program (LEAP), the NIE enables students access to Kenya’s periodicals, the Daily Nation and Taifa Leo, and the New York Times Learning Network. MLIFE funds the cost of the subscriptions.
Kawangware primary school hosts MLIFE LEAP Center, which supports over 300 students yearly to achieve LEAP’s 4Cs: read critically, think creatively, write clearly, and speak confidently. During the visit, Mukami presented the school with a Kshs 100,000 ($1,000) printer to be used by the over 2,000 students enrolled at Kawangware primary school and announced an additional Kshs 250,000 ($2,500) to support information communication technology infrastructure in the school.
Interim LEAP Director Kayte Mukami, MLOVE Program Director Mwangi Ndegwa, and Spaces of Grace Program Director Hassan Hersi accompanied Mukami. The DEB’s Chair, Pastor Moses, and the School’s Alumni Chair, Lydia Walter, attended the meeting. A team from the Nation Media Group made a presentation for the students, and the Deputy County Director of Education encouraged students to work hard to realize their educational potential.
